Converting Leads and Creating Them from Web Forms in Odoo CRM

Every sale starts with a spark of interest. That spark might come from someone filling out a contact form on your website, sending an email, or even just reaching out through a chat widget. In Odoo CRM, all of those touchpoints get captured as leads — and knowing how to turn them into real opportunities or pull them in straight from your web forms is something every sales team needs to get right.

In this guide, we'll walk through two things that go hand in hand: converting a lead into a full opportunity inside Odoo CRM and getting your website contact forms to feed leads into the system automatically. When both are working together, nothing falls through the cracks.

Understanding the Difference: Leads vs. Opportunities

Before we get into the how-to, it helps to understand how Odoo thinks about leads versus opportunities — because they're not the same thing. A lead is basically an unqualified contact. Someone showed interest, but you haven't had a real conversation yet and don't know if they're a good fit. An opportunity is different — it's someone your team has looked at and decided is worth actively chasing.

Keeping leads in their own separate pool means your pipeline stays clean. You're not wading through half-baked contacts every time you open the CRM. Once a lead looks promising, you move it over with a few clicks.

Enabling the Leads Feature

This one catches people off guard sometimes — leads aren't turned on by default in Odoo CRM. To switch it on, head to CRM > Configuration > Settings and look for the Leads toggle. Once it's active, you'll see a dedicated Leads section show up in the CRM menu, sitting apart from your main pipeline.

How to Convert a Lead into an Opportunity

Open any lead in Odoo and you'll spot a Convert to Opportunity button right at the top of the form. Click that and a dialog pops up where you can:

Merge it with an existing opportunity if something similar is already in the system.

Assign it to a specific salesperson and sales team.

Tie it to an existing customer, or create a new one right then and there.

Once you hit Convert, that lead moves into your active pipeline. What you'll genuinely appreciate about this flow is that Odoo doesn't just create a duplicate record and leave you to sort it out — it gives you the chance to consolidate everything cleanly. And one thing to really push here: always assign the lead to a specific owner during conversion. Unassigned opportunities have a way of getting ignored. When there's a name attached, there's accountability.

Creating Leads from Web Contact Forms

Odoo connects directly with its own Website module, which means any inquiry submitted through a contact form on your site can land straight in your CRM as a lead — no manual copying, no forwarding emails. To set it up, go to Website > Configuration >Settings and switch on the Create Leads option. From there, you can map your form fields to the right CRM fields so the data lands where it should.

Sales teams can also each have their own email alias. Someone sends a message to that address, and Odoo automatically creates a lead and routes it to the right team. For companies that handle inquiries across different departments or product lines, this alone saves a surprising amount of back-and-forth.

Best Practices for Lead Conversion

A few habits that tend to separate teams who use this well from those who don't:

  • Check new leads every day — let them sit too long and you end up with a backlog nobody wants to deal with

  • Use the merge option when the same person has reached out more than once through different channels

  • Drop a quick note or log an activity during conversion while the context is still fresh in your head

  • Get email aliases set up for every sales team so incoming leads route themselves without anyone needing to intervene

Why This Matters

Converting a lead isn't just a button click — it's a statement that your team has looked at this person and decided they're worth pursuing. Odoo builds a structure around that decision, making the whole thing traceable and measurable, which matters a lot when you're trying to figure out where your best customers actually come from. For teams juggling multiple campaigns or running several contact channels at once, having a reliable system for capturing and converting leads isn't optional — it's the foundation everything else sits on. Odoo CRM provides that system out of the box.
